Scallops and Mussels the Friendly PEI Way
I consider myself a culinary enthusiast and a good home cook, “fresh foodies” best describes our style. After a busy day at the studio I don’t make anything too fussy, but when I have a little extra time I like to experiment and try new things, even when it’s just the two of us. When family or friends are over, we like to kick it up a notch and prepare a dinner that showcases PEI seafood. That’s when we head to the dockside fishmonger and depending on the season buy clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobster, and all sorts of fresh...

The details that make our stoneware one-of-a-kind
Island Stoneware has been crafting pottery since 2007 and we’re one of a few production pottery businesses in Canada who still use a traditional pottery wheel and slab construction. The magic of a spinning wheel, the gentle coaxing of the clay by our experienced potters, and the rigorous finishing that’s applied to every piece are a few of the details that make Island Stoneware one-of-a-kind. Design and craftmanship We believe thoughtful design and meticulous construction are the difference between pottery you use every day and pottery that sits on a shelf collecting dust. We hand-craft our stoneware to be durable...

Simple mocktails, cocktails and drinks that stay cold in our stoneware
Summer is easy living in PEI. We relax on our deck, at one of our favourite beaches or just hang in the backyard. It comes with long sunny days and glorious evenings that are perfect for a picnic, barbeque or lobster and corn roast with friends and family. Our gatherings always include some type of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage. Maybe it’s our relaxed island lifestyle but we’re “over” the complex cocktail concoctions that use egg white and multiple hard-to-find ingredients and spirits. We prefer simple throw together drinks that take just a few minutes to prepare. Before buying Island...

Creating a handmade pottery mug to honour healthcare workers
Thanks and Gratitude in the face of COVID-19 We are deeply grateful for the work of our Chief Public Health Officer and all the healthcare workers she represents across the Island that have helped keep us safe and healthy. Dark Days of Spring Last spring we had to layoff our potters and close the studio. The future of our studio was uncertain with a nearly complete collapse of the wholesale side of our business and the prospect of summer spent in lockdown. We understood it was necessary, vital even, that we stay home. Like everyone else, we watched the public...

Make a Difference: Shop from Small Business
What Your Support Means to Me as a Small Business Owner I’ve been working for more than 25 years but had never worked for myself before we moved to Prince Edward Island and purchased Island Stoneware in 2017. Growing up in Alberta, my parents owned their own business, as did most of our family and friends. I saw up close the joy and the stress of being a small business owner, but I didn’t fully understand the experience until I became a business owner. The rush you get when you can surprise or delight a customer. Then, the immediate worry that there might...

The Power and Flavour of Local
National Mac and Cheese Day So it turns out there’s a day celebrating almost every conceivable thing you can imagine. My friend and social media guru Susan pointed out to me that July 14th is National Mac and Cheese Day and that it might be fun to make some mac and cheese and photograph it for Facebook or Instagram. Well, I love to cook, have access to amazing, fresh local ingredients here on Prince Edward Island (PEI) and, of course, I own a pottery studio which just happen to have access to beautiful dishes for plating. Susan lives in Nova...
